"I have no reason whatever to be dissatisfied with my Cheap Edition"

Charles Dickens

Autograph Letter Signed,

to James Gilbert, explaining that his "cheap edition" is cheap enough, pointing out that there is considerably more text in each of his books than in a typical novel. 2 pages, 8vo, written on the first and third pages of a folded sheet; few short closed separations at folds, faint scattered soiling.

[London], 17 December 1849.

  • Notes: "I . . . shall be exceedingly glad to believe that I have been enabled to render any effectual service to the Newsvendors' Institution [Dickens addressed the body at its tenth anniversary dinner on November 21, 1849].
". . . I have no reason whatever to be dissatisfied with my Cheap Edition, and could not think of reducing it still further in price. . . . [I]n every one of my books published in twenty numbers, there is about three times the amount of matter comprised in an ordinary Novel."

Published in Storey and Fielding, eds., The British Academy/The Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens, Vol. 5: 1847–1849 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1981).

In March 1847, Dickens arranged for some of his writings to be published by Chapman and Hall in a more affordable form (the "Cheap Edition") beginning with The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, issued in parts with a smaller page size and in more affordable bindings than the regular edition.
