Charles Loupot 1892-1962 Cointreau. 1930 62.25 x 46.5 inches. Les Belles Affiches, Paris. Condition A-: minor restoration along vertical and horiztonal folds. The first Pierrot designed for Cointreau liqueur dates from 1898 and is by Francisco Tamagno. The character was later updated by Mercier a good poster artist and also amember of the Cointreau family, but it was Loupot who was asked to do the final re-designing of the character. Loupot created an interestingly stylized Pierrot, combining sensuous curves and geometric angles, with smears of orange, red, and yellow, all applied with his incredible technique. Two posters were published, one featuring a woman, and this image, which features a man. This poster is arguably the more complete and evocative of the pair, charmingly illustrating the warmth that drinking Cointreau can produce. The typography, as usual in Loupot's posters, is superb. ref. Loupot by Christophe Zagrodzki, Le Cherche Midi editeur, Paris, 1988 - p.81, no.86A.
