(CHILDREN'S BOOKS.) The Little Traveller.
GIVE THE GIFT OF XENOPHOBIA (CHILDREN'S BOOKS.) The Little Traveller. 12 crudely colored illustrations. Pages [7]-30, apparently complete. 12mo, original wrappers, very minor soiling; pencil signature of early owner Emily Larned inside front wrapper. Philadelphia: W. Marshall, 1835
- Notes: unrecorded edition, originally published in England circa 1820. Depicts a mythical traveler, James Steerwell, passing on to his young cousins a variety of spurious insights about the peoples of the world: Laplanders, Highlanders, Dutch, Greeks, Turks, Tartars, Persians, Chinese, East Indians, Negroes, and American Indians. Omits the descriptions of the Otaheitans and Sandwich Islanders found in the 1825 Baltimore edition (Rosenbach 680). Something to offend everybody. The Dutch, for example, are described as "inclined to be corpulent," wearing "an enormous quantity of clothes, without taste or elegance." Not in Rosenbach, Shaw-Shoemaker, or WorldCat under this publisher or date.
