Christopher Wool (b. 1955)

Black Book.

Cologne: Gisela Capitain & New York: Thea Westreich, 1989.
Limited edition, folio; numbered 55 of 350 and signed by Wool in ink on the justification; complete with 17 screen prints on wove paper; bound in black paper-covered boards (narrow strip of very pale yellowing to margins; stain to lower board); 22 ¾ x 15 ¾ in.

Christopher Wool made a name in the New York art scene in the early 1980s. His word paintings, which exemplify type as visual image, have become canonical. His early white canvases with black stenciled letters spelled out text like "Sell the house, sell the car, sell the kids" (in his 1998 work Apocalypse Now). Incorporating media and techniques including photography, silkscreen, reproduction, overpainting, and erasing, Wool's work often combines human and machine marks, as in his paintings which feature smudged black lines drawn with a spray gun into gray fields.
