(CIVIL RIGHTS--LYNCHING.) "The Tree Where Burton was Hanged by Mob Springfield Aug. 08."

(CIVIL RIGHTS--LYNCHING.) "The Tree Where Burton was Hanged by Mob Springfield Aug. 08." Real Photo Post Card with a note in pencil on the reverse "This is where they did it." Illinois, 1908

  • Notes: The Springfield riot of 1908 came about after a series of alleged crimes by blacks culminating in an accusation of the rape of a white woman by a black. The fixation of the black man raping the white woman was practically pathological in nature. During the Civil War, when every able bodied white man was away in the War, not one incident of the rape of a white woman was reported, except those perpetrated by some Union troops.
