(CIVIL WAR.) WELLES, GIDEON. Letter Signed, as Secretary of the Navy, to Captain Augustus H. Kilty, requesting that Acting Master H.J. Cook of the Roanoke be examined for possible promotion to Acting Volunteer Lieutenant. Faint ink thumbprints in lower left, possibly belonging to Welles. 1 page, 4to, "Navy Department" stationery, ruled paper; minor smudging to text overall, remnants of prior mounting on verso along right edge. Washington, 31 October 1864

  • Notes: Kilty (1807-1879) achieved the rank of rear admiral in 1870.
