COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE. Autograph Letter Signed, "J. Fenimore Cooper," to his publishers, Cary, Lee and Blanchard ("Gentlemen"), authorizing the publication of a sequel to his novel, Homeward Bound entitled, Home as Found, and also making arrangements for a new edition of Homeward Bound. 1 page, 4to, with integral address leaf addressed in his hand; short closed separations at folds with one repaired on verso with cello tape, remnants of prior mounting with some loss to center vertical fold and left edge. Cooperstown, [NY], 11 August 1838

  • Notes: "By sending me your notes at six months for $1550, . . . you will be authorized to print and publish one edition of the continuation of 'Homeward Bound' called 'Home-as-Found.' The said edition to consist of Three Thousand two hundred and fifty (3250) copies of the work. I should like to have also if you propose to reprint Homeward Bound, as I shall correct a copy . . . as soon as it is out of print, if you do not. You can have the printed sheets of Home-as-Found but expressly stipulate that the work is not to be put to prin[t] until the sheets have been read by myself. . . . I have not looked at Precaution lately, but will endeavor to bring down the entire book, the last of this month, when I shall be in New-York, if not in Philadelphia."
The two novels were based upon his experiences while living in Europe from 1826 to 1833 and constitute highly idealized self-portraits of the author.
