DICKENS, CHARLES. Autograph Letter Signed, to Julia Fortescue, arranging a benefit for the poet Leigh Hunt. 3 1/2 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet, pale blue paper; minor soiling to signature page, folds. With the original envelope. "Devonshire Terrace," 21 June 1847

  • Notes: ". . . [W]e, the old original amateurs of that very small theater in Dean Street, are going to act twice at Covent Gardens for the benefit of Mr. Leigh Hunt whose distinguished literary name and services are, no doubt, known to you. . . . The favor I have to ask of you managerially is, that you will play your old part in Every Man in His Humor, on Wednesday the 14th of July, at Covent Garden Theater, and Mrs. Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, on Monday the 19th of July . . . We are going to act these same plays afterwards, for the same purpose, out at Manchester, and one at Liverpool. . . . If I find, as I hope, that we yet live in your favorable remembrance and that we may welcome you as our kind assistant again, I will beg Willmot to send you a list of the rehearsal calls, for Covent Garden . . . ."
Leigh Hunt (17884-1859) was a friend and colleague of Shelly, Keats, Byron and later on, Dickens, who based on Hunt the character of Harold Skimpole in Bleak House. Hunt faced financial difficulties throughout much of his life and depended upon the charity of friends.
