    Further information:
Dame Laura Knight was one of the United Kingdom's most prolific artists. Though her work was created in a diverse array of mediums depicting a broad range of subjects, she had a special talent for depicting innovative women, often painting female subjects in positions of strength and independence.

Knight's fascination with the Ballets Russes began in its opening season in 1911. She frequently made the journey from her home in Cornwall to London to see the display of innovative costumes and daring choreography. Though Knight was a frequent painter of ballet dancers, she only illustrated costumes for 1924's Ballet 'Les Roses'.
