First edition, folio, one of 350 copies printed; printed in red and black on heavy handmade paper; illustrated with striking openings with large woodcuts surrounded by ornate woodcut borders, with handsome initials; woodcuts by Robert Anning Bell; decorative surrounds by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue; together with the prospectus for this project, and an autograph letter signed by Updike on 28 January 1896 and addressed to Beverly Chew, regarding the announcement for the Altar Book's proposed publication with holograph addressed envelope; later carbon of a typed note to French-born New York City book dealer Maurice Sloog (1878-1961) who purchased this book and two others at auction for an unidentified collector in 1932; this copy bound in an unusual full blind-stamped pigskin with 3 brass clasps and catches, rebacked; corners worn; ex library the General Theological Seminary with bookplates; 15 x 11 in.
