Schedule of Expenditures for the Maintenance of the Poor of New-Castle County, two annual reports.

Wilmington, DE: James Wilson, [1802 and] 1803
60; 30 pages. 8vo, disbound but together; uncut; signatures of early owner Thomas Montgomery on title pages.

  • Notes: A pair of reports on the poorhouse for Delaware's northernmost and most populous county, including Wilmington. They list not only the food purchased, but the amount paid to each individual vendor. Corn was bought from 10 different vendors, in batches ranging from 7 to 45 bushels at a time. One vendor sold 10 gallons of wine, 7 gallons of brandy and spirits, 36½ pounds of tea, coffee and chocolate, and 103¼ pounds of tobacco--all on one day. Other expenses include men paid for "passage of paupers" (presumably being delivered outside the county to their places of birth),  and "coffins, joiners & grave diggers." The first report covers from February 1799 to December 1801, and the second covers from January 1802 to January 1803. 1 and 3 in OCLC, and none traced at auction.
