DONALD BRUN (1909-1999) PERSIL. 1947.

50x35 1/2 inches. Henkel & Cie., A. G. Basel.
Condition A-: minor tears in margins. Paper.
A prominent poster artist from Basel, Brun's style (like that of his prolific compatriot Herbert Leupin) was ever changing. Persil was one of his big clients for whom he designed several posters. This image of a little girl, against an orange background with no outlining, can be compared to Tom Purvis' posters of the 1930s in England, and was most likely inspired by the Beggarstaff Brothers. It is a very efficient visual effect to make the white stand out of the poster. Very comparable posters for a Persil campaign were created in 1983 by Ann Carlton at JWT London, proving that good graphic ideas are timeless!
