"DONFELD" (DONALD LEE FELD). "J. Bisset/'Jaclen.'" [FASHION / JACQUELINE BISSET]

"DONFELD" (DONALD LEE FELD).
"J. Bisset/'Jaclen.'" Likely personal fashion design produced for Jacqueline Bisset. Watercolor and gouache over graphite with fabric swatches on board. 406x203 mm; 16 1/2x8 inches, on 18x9-inch board. Signed "Donfeld" in lower center image, titled in the artist's hand at upper left. Label with outfit details on verso.

Born Donald Lee Feld, the four-time Academy Award nominee was a prolific designer in Hollywood throughout the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. In addition to more than thirty films, Donfeld also designed for television (he created costumes for Lynda Carter in the original Wonder Woman television series), cabaret, and for the Las Vegas shows of stars, such as Barbra Streisand and Nancy Sinatra. He formed close bonds with the stars he dressed and held near-weekly salons at his home for his celebrity friends, which Jacqueline Bisset attended. He is said to have gone "anywhere Jacqueline Bisset wanted him, day or night, sun or storm, Europe or Pico Boulevard." (Quoted in Robert Osbourne's article in Reuters, February 6, 2007.) Donfeld also designed fashions for high-profile clients for their personal use. (Most information taken from Creating the Illusion: A Fashionable History of Hollywood Costume Designers, Jay Jorgensen and Donald L. Scoggins, p. 310-11.)

A label on the verso indicates this is a design for a three-piece summer suit made from Pisante' silk. The ivory skirt and jacket (not shown) were to be paired with an ivory-dotted rose "suntop" complemented by a natural straw leghorn cartwheel hat and an ivory bracelet and half round button earrings.
