DORIS ULMANN (1882-1934)
Man in doorway of American Folk Song Society. Circa 1930.
Platinum print, the image measuring 5¾x7¾ inches (14.6x19.7 cm.), the original mount and overmat 14¼x11¼ inches (36.2x28.6 cm.).

Provenance
The Collection of Allen Eaton (1878-1962), an American Folklorist; to a Private Collector

  • Condition: Doris Ulmann's photograph of a man in a doorway with an American Folk Song Society banner is in very good to excellent condition with beautiful rich tones, and soft depth associated with platinum prints. The image is detailed and evocative, featuring an American flag, a woven basket, the textural cabin front, and the artfully placed figure.

The print shows two small white specs, both in the upper portion of the image, and close to the center. While not too distracting, these two small flaws are visible in our catalogue illustration. Here we can also find some tiny specs of period retouching, also quite minor.

There is a very faint, nearly indiscernible, area of inconsistency at the figure's hip. This is only visible upon close inspection, and may be a superficial rub.

The print is tipped to a period original paper mat at the top edge. The mat shows some faint spots of foxing at the top edge both on the under mat and overmat verso. This has not affected the photograph, however.

From the Collection of Allen Eaton (1878-1962), an American Folklorist; to a Private Collector.
