E. RIXUS FETES DE CHARITE DES ETUDIANTS TOULOUSE. 1902.
Saunal & Porterie, Toulouse.
62x43 inches.
- Notes: This previously unrecorded, sublime poster is quite a mystery. Not only is the artist completely unknown, but the printer's name appears in none of the standard reference books. After Paris, Toulouse was the second most prominent poster designing city in France. This was largely because several local industries, which included the Job rolling paper company, and the newspaper La Depeche de Toulouse commissioned many posters. Toulouse- Lautrec was a local, and other such artistic luminaries as Alphonse Mucha and Maurice Denis designed graphics in the region. Also, there was no shortage of excellent printers. All of this poster activity certainly had an influence on the quality of the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Rixus was presumably a student (or perhaps even a professor) there. His design, featuring a pierrot and a lady and her child watching the river Garonne, is of the purest synthetical Art Nouveau. The image is built along the diagonal perspective of the river embankment and is composed of flat tones and inspired outlining all within a simple frame.
- Condition: Condition B: repaired tears in margins, some affecting text; restoration in margins; staining in top margin; vertical and horizontal folds.
