Chaix, Paris.
473/4x331/4.

  • Notes: Very little is known about Roedel (not even his first name..) But he was a key figure in Montmartre's infamous bohemian culture. With his friend Adolph Willette, he was one of the organizers of a fundraiser for the Montmartre magazine, La Vache Enragee In his short career Roedel designed a lot of magazine illustrations and a few posters. His connection to Montmartre is evident in the majority of his posters, which show the windmills of the Moulin de la Galette, one of the most visible landmarks in Monmartre. Here, the windmill is visible and "the laundry girl, who is like one of Steinlen's blanchisseuses, and wearing the same gingham uniform, works hard with an old fashioned iron and a wet sponge to produce the steam. Down the street walk three animated objects composed completely of collars and cuffs. The fantasy of the poster recalls the work of Grandville." (Jane Abdy p. 110). Maitres pl. 195, DFP II 761, Jane Abdy p. 112.
