EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT (JUDAICA.) Karigal, Haijm Isaac; Rabbi. A Sermon Preached at the Synagogue, In Newport, Rhode-Island, Called "The Salvation of Israel:" On the Day of Pentecost... Being the Anniversary of giving the Law at Mount Sinai. 19 pages. 8vo, disbound; foxing and browning. Newport, 1773
- Notes: first edition of the first rabbinic sermon given in an american synagogue to be published. Karigal (1732-77) came to America from Hebron in 1773, staying briefly in New York but spending most of his time in the flourishing Jewish community in Newport, where the Touro Synagogue had been founded a decade earlier. Asked to give a sermon during the festival of Shavuot, Karigal spoke about the giving of the laws and the importance of the continuation of the Jewish traditions among those in exile. The sermon, given in Spanish, was so influential and moving that the congregation arranged for it to be translated and printed. Rosenbach 58; Evans 12823; Sabin 37103; Alden 515.
