(EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.) Hubbard, William. A Narrative of the Indian Wars in New-England.

(EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.) Hubbard, William. A Narrative of the Indian Wars in New-England. 288 pages. 12mo, contemporary calf, moderate wear, front board detached and rehinged with tape; lacking leaves T3-4, foxing, moderate dampstaining; original owner''s signature on rear free endpaper. Boston: John Boyle, 1775

  • Notes: Second American edition, preceded only by the quite scarce 1677 Boston edition. The preface to this abridged edition, dated just a month after Lexington, includes rhetoric about the undermanned colonists overcoming the powerful Indians. It notes that "we of this province . . . have been called to defend our lives and properties against the incursions of more distant savages," and concludes with a prayer that "wars may forever cease." "A corner-stone authority on the subject"--Howes H756. Evans 14120; Sabin 33447.
This is an unusual copy--the title page is a completely different setting of type from others seen on the market, such as the one sold at Swann on 2 October 2012. The text is identical, but the typeface and spacing are slightly different. It is printed on laid paper, but is slightly less foxed and worn than the remainder of the volume. The most readily identifiable difference is in the Psalms quotation, in which the fourth line usually reads "to their children," but here reads only "children." It may be an early typeset facsimile title page from the early 19th century, though we struggle to imagine who would go through that effort. All other pages appear normal, including the usual misprinting of 209 for page 206.
