Edward Coley Burne- Jones (after) Group of 4 woodcuts. The Birth of Venus * Venus * Cupid's First Sight of Psyche, printed in sepia * Venus beside a Doonvay, printed in sepia. Each circa 1866 Each an edition of approximately 10 Various each with full margins In 1865, William Morris and Burne-jones conceived the idea of an illustrated edition of Morris's Earthly Paradise. Burne-jones executed some 70 drawings for the project and, after unsuccessfully attempting to have the drawings reproduced by a commercial wood engraver, Morris decided to cut the blocks himself. Though Morris began to make the woodcuts in 1866, could not finish the cutting or find a suitable typeface to use and the book was never produced. Sydney Cockerell noted that, in the late 1880s, 8 sets of the woodcuts were printed under Emery Walker's direction.
