EDWARD PENFIELD HARPER'S FEBRUARY. 1894.
15 7/8x11 1/8 inches.
Condition B+: sharp creases and minor loss in image.
Seated at the side of a frozen lake, an elegant lady, muff in her lap, appears to have been reading Harper's while her skates were attached by a chivalrous young boy. Will Bradley, commenting on Penfield's work in Bradley: His Book volume 1, number 1, writes, "Mr. Penfield's work is wholly his own... there is backbone to it. No matter what the pose, no matter what the idea, behind it all there is life, there is drawing, and good drawing. This alone marks him as a master... [his ideas] are always timely, sparkling with wit, and in every way happy concepts. His color is delightful, strong and fresh, his treatment dainty." Kiehl 147, DFP I 329.
