EDWARD PENFIELD HARPER'S SEPTEMBER. 1896.

13 5/8x18 1/4 inches.
Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds; tears at edges. Paper.
In this, Penfield's first horizontal-format poster, we see how the deceptively simple design "strove to maintain the feeling of the original lithograph in his posters, which share with Lautrec's the idea of large open areas, unusual viewpoints, and warm, varied colors. American designers had a strong sense of pattern and compositional solidity, so their work transcends the merely routine adaptation of current European styles." (Word & Image p. 20). Kiehl 184, DFP I 360, Reims 1277, Maitres 1900 p. 114, Virginia p. 41, Gold 102.
