[FATHER DIVINE]. "Peace. The Abundance of the Fulness of Consciousness of God No Space is Vacant of the Fulness Thereof" * "Minds and Attention Love and Devotion Ideas and Opinions all Concentrated on the Fundamental God Father Divine." Two posters, each purple and white on a blue background with photographic portrait of Father Divine within a red oval; probably made for the same event or meeting. 22 x 28 inches. Np, circa late 1940s-early 50s E800/1,200 Father Divine, born George Baker (1880-1965), was without doubt the best-known black evangelist of the twentieth century. His career was, as one might expect, fil l e d with contro v e r s y. Beginning in Valdosta, Georgia and "Found guilty of being a pub-lic menace because of his noisy street corner congregation, but not 'crazy' enough to be confined, he made his way North"-Logan. Dictionary of American Negro B i o g r a p h y. By the 1920s, having moved to Sayville, New York, Baker (as he was still known) espoused a "black chauvinism" that attracted many followers. In 1930, he had a "Revelation," and took the name of Father Divine. Once, at Vespers in New York during the mayoral election, Fiorello La Guardia came to say "I came here tonight to ask Father Divine's advice and counsel, peace be with all of you." This did not hurt La Guard i a 's support in the black community. [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
