FIRST EDITION WITH AN ALS HARDY, THOMAS. Tess of the D'Urbervilles. 3 volumes. 8vo, rebound in deep blue morocco with gilt borders, spines, and turn-ins, by Rivière and Son, joints tender and lightly rubbed, starting on first and third volumes; original cloth backstrips and covers with gilt designs by Charles Ricketts bound in rear of each volume. (London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1891)

  • Notes: first edition, first impression of Hardy's best known work. One of 1000 copies printed. The novel first appeared in serialization in The Graphic but, as two scenes proved too risqué for the editors, the story line was slightly altered and the incidents removed. Hardy's original text was restored in this first book edition. Purdy 67-74; Sadleir 1114.
Tipped to the front of Volume 1 is a
2-page als by hardy to war correspondent harry nevinson. A crusading journalist, best-known for his reports of the Boer war and, at the time of this letter, foreign correspondent for the Daily Chronicle, Nevinson seems to have been writing Hardy about a piece concerning the Macedonian Christians. Among other points Hardy writes: "The remedy suggested--the appointment of a Christian governor uncontrolled by the Sultan but responsible to the Powers--presents some difficulties, to my mind & might lead to complications." 2 pages, 8vo, on Max Gate Dorchester stationery. 21 March 1904.
