FIRST PRINTED BIBLE CONCORDANCE CONRADUS DE HALBERSTADT [or CONRADUS DE ALEMANIA]. Concordantiae bibliorum. 417 leaves. Gothic type. Rubricated. Small extraneous early woodcut mounted in lower margin of title. Folio, 410x275 mm, 19th-century brown morocco, scuffed; occasional light marginal soiling, light dampstaining in lower outer corners with restoration in blank corner of first and last few leaves, tiny wormholes through opening leaves not impairing legibility. • Notes: first edition of the first Bible concordance to appear in print, abridged by Conradus in the early 13th century from the first concordance to the Vulgate prepared under the supervision of his fellow Dominican Hugues de Saint-Cher in the early 12th century. A distinctive feature of this edition is the use of stamped signatures outside the type page, combined in this copy with manuscript numbering of gatherings. "This volume is very peculiar in its method of signature, and shows in an interesting manner the transitional period between the manuscript and printed methods of signing"--Blades, The Use and Development of Signatures in Books 49 (this copy). GW 7418; BMC I, 58; Goff C849 (6 copies); Quétif & Échard I, 610-11. Provenance: Amberg Franciscans, early ownership inscription ("Ad PP. Francisc: Amberge Bibliotheca"); the printer and printing historian William Blades (1824-90); St. Bride Foundation, which acquired his collection, with their Blades Library stamp; Clifford Rattey, bookplate.
