FLOWN Apollo 16 Lunar Orbit Chart chart carried to the lunar surface. Number 2 of 24 plates comprising the Lunar Orbit Monitor Chart carried aboard Lunar Module "Orion." This chart covers the lunar far side area at approximately 1 degree North to 4 degrees South latitude and between 95 and 99 degrees East longitude. Approximately 7.5x10.5 inches. "Orion" flew over this area approximately 25 minutes prior to Powered Descent Initiation (PDI) engine burn that would lower the LM to the surface. NASA/MSC, 1972

  • Notes: this chart was a navigational aid which assisted some of the first humans to a landing on another celestial world. it represents a rare artifact of both cartography and human exploration.
    Inscribed and signed by Duke with: "During this phase of our flight, John Young and I were activating our Lunar Module systems prior to our Moon landing. Charles M. Duke, Jr." Additionally, Duke has written: "Flight Path" and drawn an arrow.
    On the reverse side, Duke has written "This map was used aboard the Apollo 16 Lunar Module Orion, where it assisted us in navigating to our lunar landing site! This map then remained on the moon from April 20-23, 1972. Charles M. Duke, Jr., Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot." With a dual page certificate signed by Duke describing additional flight details and features an image of Duke holding this actual chart.
