FLOWN, Lunar Surface, Apollo 15 Crew Emblem and Name Tag. An approximately 5-inch square Apollo 15 Beta cloth emblem with a 1x3 inch "J. IRWIN" name tag. Both were sewn onto Jim Irwin's Intravehicular Activity (IVA) flight coverall jacket which is composed mostly of bleached teflon material. Both the emblem and tag were cut from the jacket by Irwin, using his flight cutting tool (surgical-type scissors), just prior to returning from the lunar surface after a 67 hour stay. With a Typed Letter Signed from Mrs. Irwin providing additional details. NASA/MSC, 1971

  • Notes: The Apollo 15 LM crew had their coverall assemblies stowed in Lunar Module "Falcon" prior to launch from the Kennedy Space Center. The coveralls consisted of a jacket with pockets, trousers with pockets, and a pair of "booties." Both Dave Scott and Jim Irwin wore these coveralls inside "Falcon" when pressure suits were not required. To maximize the amount of lunar rocks and samples they could bring back, the LM crew jettisoned flight equipment no longer needed such as the space suit back-packs or "PLSS" and their coverall garments. Both men had additional coveralls available in the Command Module. Prior to jettison, Irwin not only cut free this name tag and emblem but also the name tag and NASA "Meatball" emblem that was on the PLSS.
