  • Condition: Francis Frith's suite of 8 photographs from Egypt and Greece, 1857 is in good to very good condition. Overall, the tones remain rich and strong, with clear contrast, delineation, and dimension.

The surfaces of the prints are clean and bright, but a few show faint scattered imperfections associated with the thin albumen paper, including scattered soft handling marks and a couple tiny areas of period retouching, a few with some foxing slightly entering the image area. These are not distracting, and do not detract from the overall presentation. The edges are clean and neat.

The mounts, both recto and verso, are darkened on the outer edges with scattered brown specs of foxing. Most foxing is located on the outer edges of the mount, but a few specs are slightly impacting some prints as detailed below.

4 with Frith's credit and 3 with a numeric notation and/or date in the negative, and each with Frith's printed credit and the title, and 4 with the date, on mount recto.

The Bab El-Azab Citadel Gateway, Cairo. Faint traces of rubs in the sky. Otherwise, the surface is clean and bright. With Frith's credit in the negative. The mount evidences some foxing but far away from the image area.

Cleopatra's temple at Erment, near Thebes. This print evidences the most foxing on its mount, with foxing touching the upper edge of the image area, as well as the lower edge, creating a small area of discoloration. Otherwise, the surface is clean. With Frith's credit in the negative.

The Statues of Memnon, First View. Scattered soft handling marks located in the sky. Narrow band of discoloration on the lower edge noticeable. Otherwise, no surface issues. With Frith's credit in the negative. The mount evidences some foxing but far away from the image area.

Street View in Cairo. A few specs of period retouching. Otherwise, the surface is clean. The mount evidences some foxing but far away from the image area.

The Rameseum, Thebes. One foxing spec on the mount is slightly touching the image area on the upper left edge. This is minor. The mount with light foxing on the outer edges.

The Mosque of El-Hakim. Light rubs in the sky as well as a narrow band of warming on the upper left edges. Mount with slight foxing.

Pharaoh's Bed, Island of Phila: a narrow band of discoloration around the extreme edges, and more specifically on the right and lower edges. With Frith's credit and date in the negative. Some foxing on his credit, and slightly touching the edge of the print.

Valley of The Tombs of The Kings, Thebes. Narrow band of discoloration around the edges. A few specs of retouching as well as two minuscule brownish specs, presumably from foxing in the mountain in the background. Spec of foxing touching the upper right corner of the image. Light foxing specs on the mount.
