  • Notes: Charles Jackson French was an officer's cook third class on the USS Gregory when the ship was sunk off the Solomon Islands in 1944. French wrapped a tow rope around himself and dragged his sick and wounded white shipmates through shark-infested waters to the safety of shore. His bravery was never acknowledged by the Navy Department.
