GARVEY, MARCUS. An Appeal to the Soul of White America [cover title]. [8] pages. 8vo, original lettered wrappers, reinforced along spine with paper, small stain along the fore-edge. [New York]: (Universal Negro Improvement Association, 1923)

  • Notes: first and only edition. In this pamphlet, Garvey proposed an unlikely union with white power groups, the KKK in particular, in an effort to promulgate his concept of the separation of the races by means of a massive emigration to Africa. In July 1922, Reverend Wille Moses of Philadelphia, an early supporter of Garvey, suggested getting together with the Klan (see Hill, Marcus Garvey Papers, Volume IV, pages 688-89). The idea of sitting down to talk with the Klan put off a great many African-Americans, most of whom had some experience with the Klan.
