GODFREY FRANKEL (1912-1995)
A suite of 6 vintage photographs of New York City depicting a 23rd Street subway station, architectural details, and storefronts. Silver prints, the images measuring 4 5/8x4 3/8 to 7¾x5 3/8 inches (11.7x11.1 to 19.7x13.6 cm.), the mounts 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), each with Frankel's signature and date in pencil, additional notations in pencil and ink, and his New York address stamp; four also with his Shaker Heights stamp and three with the location, all on mount verso. 1946-47

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

Frankel moved to New York City after WWII and joined the Photo League. His work was included in a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946.

  • Condition: Frankel's set of photographs is overall in very good condition. The prints are textural and contrasty, with a rich tonal range. The vintage prints evidence a few faint and superficial surface impressions, which are primarily visible when examining the prints in strong raking light; but not when viewing at them under normal viewing condition. These are listed below for the purpose of a detailed report.

    Print 1 (23rd street / Sailor): 4 5/8 x 4 ½ inches
Scattered faint impressions throughout it surface. The print has no margins and its extreme edges are clean, except for one tiny chip of loss on the upper edge; a finger print is also visible at the extreme lower right corner. Not distracting at all.
    Print 2 (Stairs - architectural detail) 4 ¾ x 4 3/8 inches
Scattered faint impressions throughout it surface. The print has no margins and its extreme edges are clean, except for one tiny chip of loss on the left edge. Hardly noticeable.
    Print 3 (Pillar - architectural detail and shade) 6 ¾ x 4 3/8 inches
A few faint surface impressions. Otherwise, clean, as well as the edges (the print has no margins).
    Print 4 (Children mannequins) 5 ¾ x 4 ½ inches
Scattered faint impressions throughout it surface, which are visible in raking light, primarily in the dark area in the upper quadrant. Otherwise, the surface is neat and clean, as well as its edges.
    Print 5 (Lamp ornament) 7 ¾ x 5 3/8 inches
Scattered faint impressions throughout it surface. A few small and scattered chips may be found at the extreme edges. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image.
    Print 6 (Door) 6 5/8 x 1 1/8 inches
A few faint surface impressions. A tiny chip with loss at the lower right corner.

The mounts recto are clean and show little sign of soil, but their versos show remnants of residue around their edges. They do not impact the signatures, nor the notations nor the stamps, except on Print 2 (stairs).
