ROBERT FRANK (1924-2019) Mauretania - arriving NYC.

ROBERT FRANK (1924-2019)
Mauretania - arriving NYC. Silver print, the image measuring 9¼x13½ inches (23.5x34.3 cm.), flush mounted, with Frank's signature in ink and his Robert Frank Archive stamp with the title and a numeric notation in pencil and the copyright stamp with Frank's credit and date in ink, on mount verso. 1952

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Robert Frank's abstracted and lyrical photograph of the Mauretania arriving in New York City's harbor is in good condition.

Upon close inspection, the surface of the print evidences some very faint and unobtrusive imperfections, including a few small impressions clustered within the lower left quadrant. There is a small handling crease, likely present prior to the mounting, positioned just within the cable in the foreground, as well as a small half-moon mark at the far upper edge, but these are only visible with careful inspection in raking light, and are not distracting.

The extreme edges of the print (which has no margins) show scattered chips and loss to the emulsion. At the corners this is more pronounced, with wear and loss. Most importantly, at the upper right edge there is a narrow band of staining that extends about 2.5 inches down from the corner.

This stain is lightly visible on mount verso, where there is also some abrasion to the mount. The mount is generally lightly and evenly soiled.

Possessing both Frank's rawness and his curiosity, both his recent arrival in the United States and his evocative ability to understand what he found here. This is a beautiful New York City image.
