[GOULD, JAY]. Plat map by Jay Gould.

[GOULD, JAY]. Plat map by Jay Gould. Manuscript map, 200 x 124 mm, partially hand-colored in blue and red; minor soiling, crease line, and early pin hole; embossed stamp in corner reading "Jay Gould, Roxbury, Delaware County." [New York, circa 1856]

  • Notes: The renowned Gilded Age financier Jay Gould was, in his younger days, a surveyor and mapmaker in rural Roxbury, NY. This map, with annotations in Gould's distinctive hand and bearing his stamp, depicts two parcels of land involved in an 1856 tax controller's deed. Prominent Roxbury landowner Hiram Montgomery is mentioned, and the land of T.S. Houghtaling, R. Wilson, and the Langheau family is shown. Manuscripts relating to Gould's early life in Roxbury are quite scarce.
