  • Notes: A group of preferred stockholders of the Erie Railway Company sued the company and its directors (including Jay Gould, James Fisk, and William "Boss" Tweed) for taking out excessive mortgages and failing to pay dividends. The plaintiffs and their small-town lawyer were no match for Gould and Tweed's connections in this case, and the suit was eventually dismissed.

    Includes: 4 autograph letters from the plaintiff John W. Thompson and his son Frank Thompson (who served as plaintiff's counsel) of Ballston Spa, NY, to retired judge Stephen Brown, 21 March to 15 September 1871. One letter complains: "We have just discovered another piece of Erie villainy which exceeds all the rest," explaining that the New York legislature was about the pass an amendment "entirely in the interest of Erie" * Printed 24-page summons and complaint issued by Frank Thompson, attorney for the plaintiffs, 8 March 1871, with marginal annotation * Printed injunction issued by Judge E.H.
