(GOULD, JAY.) Transcript of testimony in Cheever vs. Rutland & Burlington Railroad.

JAY GOULD TESTIFIES IN A VERMONT COURT (GOULD, JAY.) Transcript of testimony in Cheever vs. Rutland & Burlington Railroad. 53 pages. Manuscript notebook, 317 x 202 mm, cover moderately worn. New York, 6 to 8 March 1866.

  • Notes: Jay Gould was at that point a not-yet-famous financier, aged 29. He was called upon to testify in a complex case involving Rutland & Burlington Railroad mortgages and leases. This volume includes 20 pages of Gould's transcribed testimony in the case, as well as 30 pages of additional testimony by Dugald Stewart and D.A. Heald and 3 pages of related memoranda. Most of Gould's responses to the lawyer's questions are fairly dry, but when asked about the capacities of the plaintiff James Cheever, he replied that "I consider him too infirm . . . a man who is past the meridian of active life and is fidgety and crotchety."
