Grover Cleveland

Two items, each Signed, as President: Typed Letter * Partly-printed vellum Document.

The letter, to Robert Krause, endorsing the intention of Krause to name his son after Cleveland. 1 page, 8vo, "Executive Mansion" stationery, with integral blank; minor fading to text (but signature is bold), faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, horizontal folds. The document, appointing William H. Emory Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. Countersigned by Secretary of War William C. Whitney. 19½x15½ inches; two small areas of loss at left edge, folds, docketing written vertically at lower left, paper seal almost entirely intact.

Washington, 2 May 1893; 3 March 1888.

It would give me pleasure to allow my name to be used as his sponsor; and from what the Mayor of your city says of you, I have no doubt you will bring your boy up in such a way that . . . he will be an honor to the one for whom he was named. . . ."
