In 1909, brothers Gaston and René Caudron founded the "Société des Avions Caudron," which was one of the first airplane manufacturers in France. It was a successful business, but they eventually sold it to Louis Renault, a car maker who also manufactured aircraft engines. Thanks to their chief designer and brilliant engineer, Marcel Riffard, they constructed aircrafts that won competitions and were used by the early civil airlines (Air France, among others). They also built a lightweight fighter with a characteristic long nose for the French Air Force, the C.561, created in 1936 and introduced right before World War II. Here, the plane is represented in action - diving through the clouds, creating a dynamic diagonal composition and sense of speed. The streamlined aircraft has a slightly exaggerated pointed nose, and is simplified in its ornamentation. Published by Renault, with prominent text advertising the company, the poster was clearly self-promotional in a period when the government was starting to produce arms again. The artist, who remains virtually anonymous, designed at least two other poster designs, one for travel to Vichy, and the other, a ski poster for le Chemins de Fer.
