HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Autograph Note Signed, to students Paul Friedberg and Robert Klayman, in the space below their typed letter to him,

SETTLING A DISPUTE BETWEEN STUDENTS ABOUT HIS SHORT STORY HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Autograph Note Signed, to students Paul Friedberg and Robert Klayman, in the space below their typed letter to him, in which they try to settle an argument between them by asking Hemingway whether the principal character in his short story, "The Killers," is Nick or Ole Anderson: "Gentlemen: as far as I know the story is about Ole Anderson and most of it takes place off stage. Nick tells it and feels it. Does that settle the argument or only make it worse?" 1 page, 4to, "Paul Friedberg" personal stationery; moderate discoloration from prior matting touching signature, horizontal folds. [New York, 1953]

  • Notes: The students' letter: ". . . My cousin argues that Nick is the principal player, quoting Robert Penn Warren as his authority, and I adher[e] to the teachings of one of my English Literature professors. We feel that the story is written around Ole Anderson.
"[T]he argument cannot be settled unless we have the opinion of one who can, unqualifiedly, give his interpretation. And so we turn to you. . . ."
