HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. For Whom the Bell Tolls. Proof Copy. 8vo, plain brown paper wrappers, marked "Editorial Copy" in blue pencil across front cover

HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. For Whom the Bell Tolls. Proof Copy. 8vo, plain brown paper wrappers, marked "Editorial Copy" in blue pencil across front cover which is becoming loose; custom gilt-lettered 1/4 red morocco folding box; Christmas card from publisher laid in. New York, 1940

  • Notes: editorial proof copy with brown paper covers similar to the Book-of-the-Month Club selection copy prepared for their judges in November of that year, but printed on both sides of the leaves and with the last two chapters included. This may be a final version of that edition which contained text printed on the right side only and omitted the final two chapters because Hemingway wished to read the proofs up to that point. It may also be an advance proof copy of the First Edition for Scribner's. This copy bears an inscription from scribner's assistant, nathalie walbridge, to Bob Kriendler, dated March 18th, 1967 "because I am sure Charlie Scribner and Ernest Hemingway would want him to have this book." The enclosed Christmas card is unsigned, the recipient's name erased, and with the message "Had only time to print a little book last night. Your devoted Publisher."
