Howard, Benjamin C. A Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States... in the Case of Dred Scott versus John F. A. Sandford.
Bound with several other pieces. 8vo, early 1/2 calf, front joint torn at head. New York, 1857
- Notes: first edition of this landmark case. The decision of the Court, read by Chief Justice Taney was so controversial that it was thought to have called into question the credibility of the Court for decades. Part of the finding described Negroes as, "... a subordinate and inferior class who had been subjugated by the dominant race, and whether emancipated or not, yet remained subject to their authority, and had no rights or privileges but such as those who held the power and the Government might choose to grant them."
