IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM (1883-1976) Agave Design I. 1920s; printed 1940s.

IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM (1883-1976)
Agave Design I. 1920s; printed 1940s.
Silver print, the image measuring 13½x10½ inches (34.3x26.7 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Cunningham's signature and inscription "in the 1920s" in pencil on verso.

  • Condition: Cunningham's stunning composition Agave Design I, 1920s; printed 1940s, is overall in very good condition. The print is rich and contrasty, with deep blacks and creamy highlights.

Under close examination in raking light, the print evidences a few minor imperfections on its surface. Most visible is a short diagonal hard crease (and as visible on the online catalogue) on the lower left corner. Under scrutiny in strong raking, we can notice a few faint and superficial inconsistencies, including two soft handling marks, one in the dark area of the lower left quadrant and one in the white area of the lower right quadrant next to a very thin and short craquelure light vertical line (no emulsion loss). A few specs of residue may be noticeable in the upper right quadrant, as well as some silvering in the upper left corner and dark areas of the left and lower edges. Once again, these faint inconsistencies remain extremely discreet, even in raking light, and do not detract from the overall composition at all.

The narrow margins evidence 3 pinholes, with a bit of emulsion loss and a tiny crease on the lower far right corner. Here again, it doesn't impact the image area and remains unobtrusive.

The verso is clean, with remnants of a previous archival hinging, and with Cunningham's signature and inscription "in the 1920s" in pencil.

An exquisite abstract floral composition, and a wonderful example of Cunningham's visual experimentation.

Other prints of this image are in the collections of the MoMA and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
