WILSON A. "SNOWFLAKE" BENTLEY (1865-1931)
A group of 4 vintage snow crystals. Circa 1903-10.
Silver microphotographs from glass plate negatives, each measuring approximately 3¾x3 inches (8.9x7.6 cm.).

  • Condition: This group of four Wilson A. Bentley photographs of snow crystals is in overall very good condition. Jewel-like and finely detailed, these beautiful images are each unique. The prints are contrasty and rich.

Overall the prints present with crisp, clear tones. The prints evidence just faint evidence of handling, including some very soft handling marks, typical to these prints and not usually distracting or intrusive. Most of these slight inconsistencies to the surface are only apparent under strong, raking light. The far edges evidence some tiny and scattered chips again, typical to the work.

One of the prints evidences a tiny closed tear that appears to have been seamlessly repaired at the far left edge, entering in the black background. A few tiny chips remain visible within the emulsion at this edge and within the background. There are some superficial rubs visible within the black background at the top edge. The top edge of this print (within the white background) also shows also a bit of superficial rubbing.

Another print evidences a tiny handling crease with a spec of loss within the black background.

The versos are overall very slightly aged, but neat and clean. Each Bentley is a world unto itself, both a scientific and artistic marvel.
