With the eventual goal of moving Indians west of the Mississippi, William Henry Harrison, at the time the governor of Indiana Territory, negotiated a series of treaties with the Indian tribes of the region for the land between the Wabash and the Ohio rivers. The forced cessation of land created a growing hostility with the tribes of the region, and many tribes banded together under Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief who argued that the treaties were invalid since much of the land was owned in common and that they were negotiated without the consent of all of the regional tribes. The conflict culminated with the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 between Harrison's army and Tecumseh's warriors.
