(INDIAN TREATY.) Jefferson, Thomas. Message from the President of the United States, transmitting a Treaty of Limits between the United States of America

and the Choctaw Nation of Indians. 10 pages. 8vo, disbound; minor toning. Washington, 1808

  • Notes: An important treaty in the history of westward expansion and Indian displacement. The Louisiana Purchase made the U.S. claims to Indian lands east of the Mississippi an inevitability. At around the time of the purchase numerous trading posts were established in Indian territory and the natives were encouraged to buy on credit, quickly amassing significant debts. By 1805, in exchange for $50,500, of which $48,000 would repay debts, the Choctaw ceded almost five million acres of land on the lower Mississippi (between present day Washington and Adams counties). At that time, Jefferson refused to allow the ratification of the treaty, as he felt the deal inequitable, i.e. not enough money for that amount of quality farm land. However, by 1808, deteriorating foreign relations with Spain over Florida, which the U.S. claimed as part of the Louisiana Purchase, convinced Jefferson that a better military and settlement presence on both sides of the Mississippi was necessary.
