(INDIANS.) Hubbard, William. A Narrative of the Indian Wars in New England. 12mo, contemporary sheep, a bit worn, front joint partially cracked; browning, lacks front free endpaper; early owner's calligraphic inscription on verso of the title (David Brainerd) and other early owner's inscriptions on endpapers. Boston, 1775

  • Notes: The second American edition, preceded by the unobtainable Boston 1677 first edition. Howes cites a Newport 1772 edition, but we could find no other evidence of its existence (perhaps he is confusing Hubbard's work with Church's History of King Philip's War?). The preface to this abridged printing includes much rhetoric about the undermanned Colonists overcoming the powerful Indians -- a message surely not missed by Boston readers at the time of Lexington and Concord and the outbreak of Revolution. "A corner-stone authority on the subject"--Howes H756; Sabin 33447.
