(INDIANS.) Manuscript Document Signed by Peter Schuyler, Killaen Van Rensselaer, Robert Livingston, Johannes Cuyler and two others commissioners of Indian affairs,

directing Lawrence Clawsen to take William Printup, a blacksmith, and his assistant to the "Cenecas Country" to settle them with those Indians and to attend any meetings of the Five Nations for one year. 1 page, folded small folio sheet with integral blank; usual folds, minor browning; cloth slipcase. Albany, 27 March 1718

  • Notes: Controlled through the Commissioners of Indian Affairs in Albany, the British relationship with the Five Nations in the early 18th Century was an important one for both economic (the fur trade) and political reasons (protection of the frontier from French advancement). Thus, it is not surprising that the Commission would furnish the Indians with a blacksmith. with -- Leder, Lawrence. Rovert Livingston 1654-1728 and the Politics of Colonial New York. 8vo, publisher's cloth; dust jacket. Chapel Hill, (1961).
