  • Notes: first edition. inscribed and signed by prokosch to franklin d. roosevelt. Inscribed during a trip aboard the Cunard Line S. S. Aquitania in September of 1935: "This is the first, best, & by far the most important copy of this book; with love and loyalty for F. D. R. from F. P. / S.S. Aquitania. Sept. 26. 1935." Also laid in, on an 8vo folded sheet on Aquitania stationery, Prokosch outlines questions about the book such as "What are the weakest spots?; What effects am I bad at, and which am I best at?; Where does it get boring, [fake, immature, seem repetitious]" and asks if the style is too "arty or ever self-conscious", the dialogue "natural or revealing" and so on. Comments about the novel in another hand (not F. D. R.'s) appear on the back page.
