JAMEL SHABAZZ (1960- )

Flying High, Brownsville, Brooklyn.
C-print, the image measuring 387x489 mm, 15¼x19¼ inches, flush mounted on foam core, with Shabazz's signature, date, and notation in ink on mount verso. 1982; printed 2002.

  • Condition: LOT 132
Jamel Shabazz's Flying High, Brownsville, Brooklyn is a striking, energetic composition, with bright, rich color tones and a lustrous surface. The print evidences scattered imperfections, but these are largely confined to the edges of the image area, a result of being hung without protection to the surface.

The surface evidences some faint and scattered inconsistencies. Most importantly, there is a cluster of a few small surface scratches with some loss in the far right of the print (at the tree and just to the right; these are visible in our catalogue illustration). The far upper right corner is lightly bumped. These impefections are isolated to the background and don't overlap with the figures.

The surface of the print also evidences scattered faint soiling from handling, most noticeable in the sky (and faintly visible in our illustration). There is a line of residue at the horizon line at the left side of the image, and a small isolated area of similar residue near the lower left corner. These also don't interfere or overlap with the figures in the foreground of the photograph.

The print is flush mounted to foam core. Mount verso shows at least two framing or presentation methods, and some wear. However this does not affect the signature, which is bold and legible.
