James, C. L. R. The Black Jacobins. Mimeographed page proofs for a play based on the novel with over 50 substantial corrections by James, signed in full twice. 71 pages, legal folio, rectos only. Included is the original mailing envelope, addressed by James and sent to pioneer bookdealer in African-Americana, Walter Goldwater. Should Be Seen. London, 1967 E1500-2500 C. L. R. fames's working draft with final corrections, additions etc., for a projected play never performed based on his landmark historical novel, The Black Jacobins, which deals with the famous slave revolt in Haiti led by Toussaint L'ouverture. It follows through with the aftermath and Bonaparte's deceit of and eventual and virtual assassination of Toussaint. A significant piece with important corrections and additions. There are two versions of the Prologue, and alternative version to Act I, scene Vii, as well as other whole page changes in scenes. Additionally there are several inserted slips of paper with radical changes in dialogue between Dessalines and Moise, one of which is entirely written by hand
