JAMES NORTHFIELD (1888-1973) AUSTRALIA FOR SUNSHINE AND ROMANCE. Circa 1936.
19 5/8x24 3/4 inches. Northfield Studios, Melbourne.
Condition A: minor repaired tears in margins.
Combining the romance of the Gold Rush days with the bright good weather, this poster depicts an almost ghost-like stagecoach speeding across an exotic brown, yellow, and green Australian landscape. Northfield was a prolific poster artist who did work for the Victorian Government Railways and the Australian National Travel Association as well as smaller, local advertisers. "He served his apprenticeship with F. W. Niven, the Melbourne printing firm, as a lithographic artist . . . [and then] set up his own studio in Melbourne in the early 1930s." (Trading Places / Australian Travel Posters p. 28 and cover).
All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues and are posted below.
