JANN RENNER WEIHNACHTS-AUSSTELLUNG. Circa 1930.

33x23 1/2 inches. Kunst im Druck, Munich.
Condition B+: plastic strip affixed to top margin; minor creases in image. Paper.
We do not know if Jann Renner was related to Paul Renner, the inventor of the Futura typeface, although the two men both came from Munich and the high typographic quality of this piece is obvious. It is strictly organized along textbook avant-garde lines to convey all of its information using only two colors, incorporating only a small, nicely drawn illustration in the center. The poster advertises a Christmas Exhibition of decorative arts designed by the artists of the Vereinigte Werkstatten fur Kunst im Handwork, a group founded in 1897. The rigid geometric approach leads us to assume that by the early 1930s the Vereinigte Werkstatten had begun to follow the precepts of Bauhaus design.
